Medical care for your pet is very important
The short time after an operation or other medical procedure can be very dangerous for your pet. At this point, their body is very sensitive. But, they are unaware of this. This means that they will try to live their life normally; while you have to pick up the pieces. Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be too hard. You just need the right techniques and knowledge. To help you out, this post will be going through some of the important factors of doggy aftercare. So, now you just need to start playing nurse; and, the dog has to stop being itself. This might sound hard. But, you’ve already gotten this far.
The cone of shame
In most cases, your dog will have to wear a cone when they’ve had surgery. This is the most common tool used to stop animals from licking or biting their wounds. Unfortunately, though, some dogs don’t work with cones. Instead, they will constantly find new ways to remove it from their head. If you’re unprepared for this, it can be very stressful to deal with. Your dog will have a very sensitive wound that should be untouched. And, their primary urge will be to clean it. Thankfully, cones aren’t the only option. A lot of people find success in using a piece of clothing to do this job. You can buy specialised clothing for most animals to use during these times. This option is much harder for your dog to remove than a cone.
Next, you need to consider the medication you’ll be giving your dog. Most dogs are experts when it comes to dodging pills. They will be able to eat around a whole bowl of food; leaving just the pill untouched. So, you need to use something that tempts them even more than their regular food. Dog treats for medication can be found in most vets. And, they don’t cost a fortune. These sorts of treats are designed to conceal the medication that your dog needs to take. Unlike their regular food, it’s likely that your dog will swallow the treat without a second thought. So, it’s at least worth a try. If you fail with this, you can also try to use a pill gun to get the pill into their throat.
Peace and quiet
As mentioned above, during this time your dog will be extremely sensitive. So, if you have young children; it could be best for them to be away from the dog when you’re not around. You don’t just have to worry about the kids, though. A lot of dogs will try to remain their active and happy selves when they’ve been under the knife. They don’t understand the need to be careful. So, it’s best to burn their energy deliberately. Engage in play which you know is safe. And, don’t leave them around dangerous or sharp objects while you’re away.
Hopefully, this will give you a good idea of what needs to be done during your dog’s aftercare. It can be hard to make sure that you give your dog the very best possible care that you can. In some cases, it’s worth talking to your vet to make sure that you’re doing the right thing.
