If you have never had a dog before, knowing what to buy can seem overwhelming. To get you started, here are some items that should be necessary for any new dog owner.

A baby gate

Okay, so your dog may not be a puppy, but there will still be some areas in the house where you don’t want your dog to roam. You don’t need to spend a fortune, but you should make sure the gate you install is safe for your dog. Alternatively, a homemade gate, such as a strip of strong cardboard will do the job just as well.

A playpen

Your dog shouldn’t be left in a locked room as it will begin to cry and possibly cause damage to your doors. However, playpens come in a range of sizes and are safe enclosures for your dog to play in, whether you are at home or not.

A bed

You probably don’t want your dog sharing your bed, though it will probably try if you leave your bedroom door open. Instead, your dog will need its own comfortable space to sleep. You don’t necessarily need to buy one as a cardboard box layered with comfy blankets will do.

A collar

Essential for training and identifying your dog (some dogs do look the same), there is a variety on the market, from a slip collar to a triple crown dog training collar. Whatever you choose, it needs to be comfortable for your dog to wear. If it’s too loose, your dog could easily slip out of it and escape, and if it is too tight, your dog will be in a lot of discomfort. A common rule is, if you can slip two fingers between it and the dog’s neck, then it should be okay.

A retractable leash

Perfect for allowing your dog freedom when walking, retractable leashes can let your dog wander when it is safe, and pulled back when entering populated areas and roads.

ID tag

In the event your dog goes missing, having a tag with your name and phone number inscribed on it, will enable the finder to contact you.

Poop scoop and bags

You know what these are for, so there is no point going into great detail about them. However, it is advisable to buy stronger bags to avoid them splitting open.

Cleaning fluids

If your new dog is a puppy, it will take time for them to become properly toilet trained, so you need to expect occasional accidents around the house. Your regular carpet cleaner may do the job, but you will also want something to get rid of the foul odor left behind.

Toys

Dogs love to play, and you, as the owner, will be the favorite plaything. However, you should still buy your dog safe and interactive toys to play with, including balls and something to chew on. Don’t give your dog anything that might cause it to choke, so be wise, and buy specialist dog toys.
