Christmas Safety Tips For Your Pet

Give him an escape route

If it all gets too much a nice inviting crate with blankets to make a den with a tasty stuffed kong will help your dog feel safe. Cats need a quiet area too, on your bed, in a wardrobe any where he can escape from the hustle and bustle.

Don’t over feed

We all want to spoil our pets but foods he isn’t used to or over fatty meats could cause a gastric reaction that really isn’t condusive with Christmas guests unless you want to put off Uncle David visiting for life! There’s nothing wrong with a little treat now and then but you might want to check here or if you still aren’t sure check with your vet to make sure that treat isn’t toxic to your pal.

Home safety

Come the end of Halloween every other advert features a Christmas tree, hundreds of presents and a chocolate selection box.  As a bit of a scrooge I’m afraid all I see is smashed baubles, chew toys and extortionate vet bills.  It doesn’t take much extra thought into Christmas proofing your house unless you own a hound but that’s another blog for another day (hint: they are pigs on stilts).

Gifts

For all of my rescue pet owning years January has been a month of confusion, a brand new year of hope and fresh starts and yet thousands of dogs and cats find themselves homeless.  I know a lot of them are badly thought out presents but I have a theory that a good percentage of rehoming’s are out of Christmas present destruction frustration.  If you finally get your hubby to listen to your nagging and he buys you THAT pair of impossible shoes and then the dog eats them that’s a lot of money to chuck down the drain not to mention the hours of pointless nagging.
